⒐Conclusion
In the dynamic world of precision manufacturing, meeting the intricate demands of clients requires innovative thinking and adaptive designs. This case study focuses on AUKE, a company renowned for its custom cleaning baskets, which has developed a unique basket with an unconventional internal handle. This design not only addresses specific client requirements but also enhances the overall functionality and aesthetics of the product, demonstrating how creativity can solve complex challenges in manufacturing
AUKE's client is a German enterprise specializing in the research and mass production of precision components and assemblies for internal combustion engines, hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cells, and autonomous driving systems. Given the industry's rigorous standards and the need for reliability, AUKE was tasked with creating various custom cleaning baskets and turnover trolleys that fit specific operational needs.
The basket in question was crafted from high-quality 304 stainless steel, measuring 286x214x86mm. It possessed a square shape with punched long oval holes, facilitating effective cleaning and drainage. The basket must maintain smooth surfaces on all sides but wit handles.
One particularly design challenge came from the basket handles. There is no special on the baskets dimensions, material composition, and surface treatments, but as to the handles, there was one critical condition: the basket must maintain smooth surfaces on all sides. As traditionally, handles are always placed on the outside of basket, if so, there will be convexness which makes the basket surface not smooth. If make the basket with built-in handles, that is to punch holes on two sides, it will potentially cause parts leeking out and safety concerns during transport and storage. Then the difficult point is how and where to place the handles.
To address the client's dual requirement for handles and smooth surfaces, AUKE's design team proposed an innovative solution: embedding the handles internally within the basket. This concept consisted of two tubular metal sections used as handles, recessed into the sides of the metal storage basket.
Rationale Behind the Design

Addressing RisksEven with a robust design idea, there were risks to consider. The insertion of a handle could potentially lead to leaks or contamination, especially if used in environments dealing with delicate components. To mitigate this risk, the design team ensured that the internal handles were strategically aligned and sealed to uphold the basket's integrity during operation. |
After finalizing the design, AUKE proceeded with the development of prototypes. These prototypes underwent rigorous testing to evaluate their functional and aesthetic compliance with client expectations.
The results from the sample tests were overwhelmingly positive. The custom stackable baskets performed as intended, facilitating easy lifting and transport without compromising on cleanliness or structural integrity. The client expressed satisfaction not only with the functionality but also with the design's visual appeal.
After iterative feedback and testing, the client officially approved the design. They appreciated the innovative approach AUKE had taken to address their specific needs while adhering to high standards of quality and function. The successful implementation of this design led to the next phase of production, allowing AUKE to manufacture a variety of similar stainless steel baskets with the internal handle feature.
